Since I tend to own my vehicles so long, the return on investment (when using a K&N) is pretty darn good. What I've learned over the years is that you have to 1) check the filter periodically to make sure it is not too dirty, and 2) properly clean, and don't over oil the filter. I have purchased the filter cleaning kit, and it is very effective. I usually let the cleaner soak for a good 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing the filter with warm water. I then let the filter completely dry out for the better part of the day. I then lightly oil the filter with the K&N oil, let it sit for a while to make sure I've got good coverage. After that, I use a paper towel to clean up any excess oil. This is where folks tend to have trouble--they either wait until the filter is completely caked with dirt before they clean it, or they over oil the filter. When the filter is over oiled and then installed, that oil can coat the sensors in the intake tract (mass air sensor), leading to improper readings and poor engine performance. On the RAV4, the only issue I have is with the design of the air box, not the filter itself. This can make installation trickier than most cars, but it takes only a few minutes at most to do it. To make it easier, I lifted the front edge of the airbox, leaving the back part hinged in place. I inserted the filter by holding it from the bottom and pushing it towards the top and back (so that I'm holding it in the lid of the airbox. I then pull my hand out, while closing the lid as I do so--the lid then properly seals, and I attach the retaining clips. I'm not sure of any performance gains (K&N claims a 9hp gain over stock)--I rarely have to dip into the throttle, since the 3.5L vvti V6 is plenty powerful for such a small ute. I am interested to see if it improves gas mileage, and have been tracking it--in city driving, I average 21-22.4 mpg (calculated). On the highway, I average 26-28 mpg, depending on conditions and cargo.
